the shape of our days is an ongoing series of creative projects that reflect on the powerful relationship and unwavering devotion a mother has for her child. Addressing themes that have emerged since I became a mother - accumulation, attachment & release, physical demands, reunion with nature and the fleeting nature of early childhood, I will use this residency to make new works (stitched collages, drawings and writings), while also exploring approaches intended to ignite my son’s creativity, process and independent focus alongside mine in the studio. I have ideas for a collaborative research adventure and process that my son and I will undertake during the residency. And, I am interested in how materials in a studio space might be designed to encourage and nourish independent creativity for the child while an artist-parent also continues to produce.
